Heartburns are considered to be minor and unimportant ailments by most people; but this is not the case. Being a fairly common ailment, most people are ignorant about the potential dangers that advanced or chronic heartburn poses. Heartburns are caused by acid reflux which simply means that acids in the stomach have backed up into the esophagus. In the medical field, heartburn is referred to as Gastro esophageal Reflux disease (GERD). Heartburns are said to cause ulcers by infecting the esophagus lining with these acids.

Industrial chemical drugs are what most people use as a heartburn remedy. Recent research however sheds doubt on the effectiveness of these drugs to alleviate heartburns. These drugs are designed to inhibit stomach acids which are in fact needed in the stomach to assist in the breakdown of food as well as digestion. To this end, natural remedies have now been introduced. They are effective and do not have any side effects while they are being used. This natural method of heartburn alleviation has its foundation in the types of food that we consume and how we consume them.

For one, taking plenty of water each day is a must. Filtered water that is clean stabilizes pH levels in the stomach and therefore ensures that the acids that are present in the stomach remain at their required levels. Ginger and peppermint are other natural cures for heartburns. It is advisable that ginger is taken with food in measured portions although it can be eaten alone. Peppermint can be taken in drink form and its ability to balance stomach acids will be invaluable in preventing heartburn as well as acid reflux.

Other natural products that have been used and found effective as a cure for heartburn include apple cider vinegar. This is also taken with drinks. Then there are those who take roasted unsalted almonds and they too have been known to work. But perhaps in treating heartburn, the surest way is to go for preventive remedies other to wait until you already have the heartburn and start using them. Therefore you have to be very conscious of the foods that you take. For instance, spicy foods are a sure recipe for the esophageal disorder so by avoiding them you prevent the occurrence of heartburn.
